Our conceptions of politics should: (a) assist in defining our normative objectives in politics; (b) include common political perceptions; and (c) characterize the field of politics in a way that aids in explanation. Most of our established definitions in these areas have been superseded in recent years by events, such as the emergence of new social movements and the fall of the Berlin Wall, in combination with changes in political science’s culture of expectations. I present a vision of politics that emphasizes the meeting point of conflict and power, and I contend that this conception is more in line with our political environment now than are most mainstream conceptions, particularly in light of recent worries about democracy and democratization.
